How to Challenge Yourself and Overcome Adversity W/ Rich Roll

Rich Roll is the #1 bestselling author of Finding Ultra: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World’s Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself. He is an Ultraman athlete who completed the 320 mile endurance triathlon for the first time in his early forties. He’s also the host of The Rich Roll Podcast, a show that covers topics like food politics, fitness, meditation, and sustainable and plant-based lifestyles. When looking at Rich Roll, it’s hard to believe this man used to be an overweight alcoholic.

Rich Roll was a talented swimmer in high school who didn’t drink or do any drugs. One night, Rich went to a party after a swim meet at a university and ran into Bruce Kimball, the greatest American talent in diving at the time. Kimball also had a notorious alcohol problem and Rich got drunk for the first time with his new idol. He noticed that with alcohol all the problems he didn’t know he had seemed to evaporate. It wasn’t long before alcohol destroyed his ambition in his swimming career. However, Rich graduated from Stanford and Cornell and an ended up with a career as an entertainment attorney.

Fast forward to age forty, Rich was now an unhappy overweight alcoholic. He knew his wife wanted him to change, but she also knew that she couldn’t fix him herself. Eventually, Rich had a health scare that made him realize that if he didn’t change his ways, he would end up dead.

Rich believes that it’s only when things don’t go your way that you find out what you’re capable of, and this is why he likes to push the limits of his body and his mind. He shares his views on his relationship with his wife and kids, his advice for addicts and alcoholics who want to recover, and how a work/life balance should not be as balanced as we’re led to believe.
